Many derby blogs discuss beginnings and endings, the various ways that derby can heal the soul, and how to enhance performance. You don’t often hear about how the derby journey can include transitions to different leagues. This month, PJRD brings you the accounts of two of our transfers, MC SlamHer and Anita Bodybag.Read More
PENN JERSEY ROLLER DERBY TO HOST 2016 BATTLE ON THE BANK TOURNAMENT
PRESS RELEASE- FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Penn Jersey Roller Derby is proud to announce that they will be hosting the 9th annual Battle on the Bank tournament in Philadelphia, PA. Battle on the Bank will be held June 3-5, 2016 and will mark the first time the tournament will take place on the east coast.
Battle on the Bank is the national championship tournament of the Roller Derby Coalition of Leagues (RDCL), the governing body for banked track roller derby, where teams from across the country compete for the national title. The Penn Jersey Roller Derby She Devils have been proud to represent Philadelphia and the east coast at the tournament since 2013. After becoming a full RDCL member in the spring of 2015, Penn Jersey Roller Derby was excited to accept the nomination to host the national event. The league has big aspirations for the tournament’s success, the visibility of banked track roller derby, and their current Indiegogo campaign for improvements to their training and game facility is just one indicator of their enthusiasm.
“We are excited to host this year’s Battle on the Bank. PJRD has gone through a whirlwind of change the last two years. This is the culmination of all of that hard work,” said Matt Tyrrell, President of Penn Jersey Roller Derby. “The opportunity to host a banked track event of this size is something special, and hasn’t happened in Philadelphia since the early 80’s. We welcome the chance to be ambassadors for RDCL on the east coast.”
The Battle on the Bank tournament was founded in 2008 between the Los Angeles Derby Dolls, San Diego Derby Dolls, and the Texas Lonestar
Rollergirls as a way for the three banked track teams to play each other under one ruleset. The tournament now features the six RDCL member leagues, as well as other banked track teams by invitation only. Current RDCL members include the Los Angeles Derby Dolls, San Diego Derby Dolls, Orange County Roller Girls, Arizona Derby Dames, Tilted Thunder Rail Birds, and Penn Jersey Roller Derby.
Penn Jersey Roller Derby was founded in 2005 as the She Devils, a women’s only flat track league. The league quickly expanded to include the Hooligans men’s team in 2007, and the purchase of the banked track came in 2010. The Hooligans became MRDA sanctioned in 2014, and the league joined the RDCL in 2015.

Derby Name and Number? How did you come up with it?
-General Tso Fine - 899. $8.99 is the cost of overpriced General Tso's chicken. The number 8 is lucky in Chinese.
Where did you grow up?
-Chinatown, Philadelphia, PA. I know. Total shocker...
What made you start playing roller derby?
-My sister, Misfortune Cookie! <3
What is your pre-game routine?
-"Hydrate." Make sure I have my uniform and gear. Eat bananas while maintaining eye contact with strangers.
What is your favorite off-skates workout?
-Running. Going to the gym...sometimes.
What is your favorite position to play and why?
-Jammer. Blockers are usually bigger than I am, so it's the most physically challenging position for me. That's fun.
Worst derby-related injury?
-I'M NOT LISTENING! LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA...
What is the most rewarding part of being a member of Penn Jersey Roller Derby?
-Watching us and the sport grow. Meeting loads of awesome derby people. Traveling to places I wouldn't otherwise go with said awesome derby people.
As a member of a bitracksual league, tell us how you feel about the banked track versus the flat track.
-We're proof that they can co-exist. I love them both. Those double-headers that we played against Capital District Trauma Authority, Mass Maelstrom, and the Carolina Wreckingballs were awesome!
What inspires you most when training?
-Whenever I'm tired or hurting, I ask myself something like, "Is there anything left in me that I can give for these guys right now?"
